The University has decided to remove Tristan Burke as a tutor due to funding issues. We disagree with this decision as he just was shortlisted for a very deserving pastoral lead role. We would like to attempt to change this decision

It’s ridiculous that every year, we hear of someone within the department of arts getting cut meanwhile the schools to do with science receive more funding, more trips and more research leave while we as a department are left to struggle. The world would be nothing without the arts, so what good is removing the very people trained to teach the next generation

It is disgusting how little this university cares about humanities. This university needs to understand that science without humanities just becomes unethical.

The University has very odd decisions about eho to remove especially when he was just nominated for an award. What was their thought process behind this

Tristan has been one of the sole people who has continued to encourage and support me through my studies whilst at Bangor. His modules are ones that I looked forward to attending and learning from greatly. Tristan is a lecturer who pushes students to be better, offers incredible advice and attends extracurricular opportunities supporting his students. It’s so upsetting that Tristan has given his all into Bangor University, and yet has not been treated with the same respect, especially after just being shortlisted for a pastoral award. If that doesn’t say something about his incredible dedication to the students, then I don’t know what else does.

I’m shocked that the university has decided to let go one of the most engaging lecturers on this course. The uni doesn’t even have the decency to keep him on until the end of the year when there are people who are depending on him for support with final assessments. Not to mention not he’s been awarded the best pastoral lead. There was no logic behind this decision, Tristan has received nothing but amazing feedback from all the students I’ve spoken to. This is nothing but an attack on humanities, they have just gotten rid of one of the most vital people in the English department.

As a mature student, when I first started at Bangor I felt very out of my depth and was riddled with imposter syndrome. Tristan was one of the first lecturers that I spent a good amount of time with who helped me realise I am capable and meant to be on this degree. Throughout my first year, he has ran the modules I have found the most challenging, yet most enjoyable. He is always there to support and push students to reach their full potentials. He has one of the kindest and most emphatic souls in the entire department. This is an attack on the arts and the students who wish to pursue it. Tristan attends many extracurricular events of his own free will and encourages fantastic work in not only myself, but every other student I speak to. As someone who relies heavily on pastoral care, this decision has really made me concerned for the years ahead at Bangor.

As someone who had Tristan as a tutor during their first year, this decision absolutely baffles me. He's wonderful at keeping the class engaged and motivated to do readings, participate during seminars and put their all into their assignments. When I had begun the module he was running, I was nervous and felt unsure if I would be able to perform as well as the other students due to my lack of English A Levels, but Tristan was the one to reassure me and inspire me to feel confident and ready to give our midterm and final my all. He was always ready to help outside of class, and I had attended some seasonal events that were held for the arts department that he was a part of. Even outside of our lectures, he's a kind, easy going and highly empathetic individual who inspires each student. This decision to cut him off isn't one I agree with at all, and its a downright shame that the arts department is being cut down in favour of funding others.

Bangor University, you should be ashamed. Tristan is genuinely one of the best lecturers I've ever had. He really cares about giving his students the best he can. His lectures are engaging and very informative, his seminars are great too. The support Tristan has given me as pastoral lead has been amazing, he's helped me feel more confident about work when I've needed extensions, he helped me a lot when I've had issues that made me not show up to uni due to anxiety. Stop cutting the arts in favour for others. The arts/humanities are just as important. Tristan is amazing, his feedback has been so helpful, his modules and lectures really challenge you which is amazing. I'm shocked by Bangor's decision to let him go. I'm disgusted and disappointed by this. Tristan deserves better, the arts deserve better. Bangor, do better.

This is absolutely devastating news, Tristan has been the best lecturer and pastoral support during my three years at Bangor, he is an integral part of this University and it would be a real shame to let him go, he deserves a lot better

Tristan has helped me so much throughout my time at Bangor University. Without his aid I doubt I would have been able to continue my studies at all! Please reconsider this decision. All of my peers and I are devastated by this choice.

Tristan has been there every time if I have needed support with work. He did so with the upmost respect and compassion. It’s devastating to hear that the uni don’t appreciate or support him. This choice shows such a lack of respect for staff members who are so dedicated to their work.

Whilst I am not a humanities student, my partner has studied under Tristan for her first year. I have never seen such a boost in confidence that she received with his tutelage, and I find it to be a massive blunder to let him go. The University will no doubt regret this for years to come should they stand by their decision.

I feel upset about the way professor Tristan was let go. He is a great lecturer who actually cares about his students. It's not right that he got fired just because of money.

This is a horrifying and disappointing decision. As pastoral lead on my undergrad, Tristan supported me enormously, and my university experience would have been significantly worse without him. I think this is a real shame.

I am deeply upset to hear that Tristan is leaving, as he has been an exceptional pastoral leader and an inspiring lecturer throughout my time at Bangor University. His unwavering support, both academically and personally, has had a profound impact on me. He always takes the time to understand his students as individuals, offering guidance that is both compassionate and practical. His lectures are engaging, dynamic, and carefully tailored to the needs and interests of his students. He has a rare ability to make complex concepts in English literature accessible and exciting, and his passion for the subject is infectious. The energy and enthusiasm he brings to every class make learning an enriching experience, and it’s clear he always goes above and beyond to ensure his students succeed and thrive. The fact that such an outstanding educator is being let go due to financial constraints is both absurd and heartbreaking. It’s a loss to the university and to all the students who have benefited from his expertise and dedication. His commitment and contributions should be valued, not dismissed. I strongly believe he deserves to remain at Bangor University and continue his invaluable work with students. His departure would be a disservice to us all.
