Student jobs accessible to all - Welsh should not be an essential or desirable requirement.

Bangor university should advertise a much larger number of student jobs not requiring Welsh language skills. Currently, over 92% of student jobs advertised state Welsh is either an essential or a desirable requirement. Bangor University has taken the introduction of the Welsh Language Standards policy too far, to the point it has become a positive discrimination policy, giving a huge advantage from the get-go to Welsh-speaking students when applying for jobs and discriminating against international students, European students, students from the south of Wales, and those from other parts of the UK. The struggle is real for these students. It is, sadly, a familiar sight these days to see posts on social media from international students asking for help to find a job that requires English only and many are requesting assistance from the hardship fund and queueing up on Saturdays to get a free meal from the hot meals project run by the students' union. Equal opportunities are essential for the university system to benefit society as a whole and Bangor University is doing a (very) poor job of it. Please, sign the petition if you believe we - all students, regardless of nationality or mother tongue - deserve a chance to get a student job based on merit and not based on whether we were born in North Wales or not. Let's all of us learn Welsh for pleasure (if we wish to do so) at our own pace/ when we get some spare time, not because we worry we won't be treated as equals when job-hunting within our own university. It's not the University's decision to have Welsh as a requirement (actually more often a suggestion) on job applications, it's the law.. Welsh is as much an official language in Wales as English is and it should be treated that way, as it deserves to be after hundreds of years of restrictions placed on people simply for speaking their mother tongue.

We live in Wales?? It shows a basic modicum respect to learn the language of the country you're studying in (and trying to get a job in!!)
This is NOT a university policy. Its the governments Welsh Language policy, but I agree you should be at least eager to learn Welsh if you require to work here, you donโt have to be fluent, but at least make an effort to keep the language alive.
