What level should I attend?

The level requirements displayed below are for new members to the club as a baseline before your position is properly assessed. Current members should not be looking to this as a checklist for moving up a level.

Level holder

Beginners is for anyone who is brand new to playing tennis or has only been playing a couple of years, those who's skills may not enable them to play in proper games yet. The Beginners level focuses on building fundamental skills such as basic forehands and backhands, volleys and light serves & smashes. The games in beginners are meant to be more fun and engaging and focus less on competitive ability to build you up for potential movements up into Intermediate level. If you have not played tennis properly before, meaning that you've never participated in a club or have had coaching before, Beginners is for you. If you are too strong for Beginners, you will be moved up to Intermediate level.

During the Campus Life sessions hosted on Wednesdays, Beginners are kept to one side whilst Intermediate and Advanced level players take the other - this is because Beginners are not expected to be able to be able to play against the higher levels with much consistency, however if you are a Beginner and would like to try the Intermediate side, you may ask.

What skills Beginners players focus on

  • Forehands
  • Backhands
  • Volleys
  • Footwork
  • Consistency
  • Simple smashes & serves

Intermediates is for those who have had coaching in tennis before or have played for a few years or more, having experience in either competitive or responsive play. Intermediate level focuses on consistency and more competitive, fast-paced play that requires excellent control and footwork. The games in Intermediates are meant to introduce you to different styles of competitive play, introducing new shots, serves, and responses to shots with varying power. If you have not played many competitive games of tennis before outside of rallies, Beginners may be better suited for you, and you will be moved up once it's felt that you're ready. Subsequently, if you are too strong for Intermediates, you will be moved to Advanced level.

During the Campus Life sessions hosted on Wednesdays, Intermediates and Advanced-level players play with each other on their own court, focusing on their competitive gameplay and faster-paced skill. Some Intermediates typically struggle in these sessions due to the presence of Advanced-level players, but this is an excellent time to learn how to defend against more confident and stronger players.

What is generally needed for Intermediate level

If you cannot do everything on this list, please attend Beginners

  • Be able to hold a consistent rally from the baseline
  • Be able to place a ball accurately in different parts of the court when instructed
  • Can execute simple volleys
  • Can serve with some consistency into both right/left service boxes
  • Can score a tennis match with some mistakes
  • Uses footwork well when preparing for shots

What skills Intermediate players focus on

  • Attack & defence
  • Directional control
  • Various serves & smashes
  • Serve returns
  • Baseline vs all-court play
  • Shot selection & court awareness

Advanced level is for those who have been playing tennis for a very long time, or have had a substantial amount of coaching or experience in the sport before, either at club level or continuous practice. Advanced level focuses less on actual coaching of new skills, and more on the diverse dynamics of competitive games, where other players in this level use confident skills against each other and improve based on performance. The games in Advanced are meant to maintain and support players current skill and improve tactics and performance through more informal coaching. If you have not played many competitive matches before or only have a few years under your belt, Advanced level is not for you yet, and we recommend trying Intermediate level first for you to be moved accordingly.
