Volunteers are the pillars of our community; thanks to them hundreds of trees have been planted, thousands of free hot meals have been served to local people in need, hundreds of kilograms of rubbish have been pulled from Bangor's streets and beaches, and hundreds of children have been entertained. This is a movement you don’t want to miss out on!
Whether you want to boost your employability, give back to the community, or meet new people, there’s something for everyone.
All our projects are student-led, meaning you can literally shape the work you’re involved in while developing valuable skills such as like teamwork, leadership, communication, creativity, and problem-solving. This is your chance to be part of something bigger and make a real difference to the community.
Our opportunities are flexible to suit your schedule, with both General Volunteer roles and more involved Project Leader positions for those who want to take a bigger role in shaping projects.

What happens next?
A Project Leader from your chosen volunteering project will review your application, approve it, and get in touch with you about how to get involved! Response times vary depending on the project, so please be patient. Your volunteering journey is just getting started!

Getting your DBS
A DBS check is a background check to make sure you are suitable to work or volunteer with children or vulnerable adults.

Cost
The DBS itself is free, but you may need to pay a small fee (around £12.75) if you use in-person ID verification. International students may also need to provide a criminal record check from their home country.
Who needs it
Some volunteering projects (e.g. Hot Meals Project, Sbectrwm, Sblat, Volunteer Drivers, Wellbeing Buddies) require a DBS check before you can start.
How to apply
You’ll be contacted by HR with a link to complete the application. You’ll also need ID for verification (online or at a Post Office).
Already have a DBS?
You may be able to reuse an existing DBS (including from certain courses or the update service). Send a copy to volunteering@undebbangor.com to check.
International students
You can volunteer, but you may need a home country criminal record check and there may be hour limits depending on your visa.
Important
You can’t start DBS-required volunteering until your check is approved, but other roles may still be available without a DBS.
Visas and Volunteering
A volunteer is someone who gives their time freely, with no contract or payment. A voluntary worker has a contract and must do specific tasks, which can count as work under visa rules.
The projects here are true volunteering, so students can take part freely with no visa limits on hours. However, it’s recommended to keep it to around 20 hours a week, so it doesn’t affect studies.
Students can log their hours after signing up to help keep track of their time.
