Organisation / Project Details
The Buddy Project is a peer-to-peer support scheme that pairs students with volunteers who share similar interests, giving them the opportunity to meet someone new, have a chat and enjoy activities together in the local area. Volunteers are there to offer companionship, conversation and shared experiences, rather than professional support.

What can volunteers gain?
• Build valuable skills in communication, active listening, empathy, confidence and working with others.
• Gain meaningful experience in peer support and volunteering that you can add to your CV and talk about in future applications and interviews.
• Meet people outside your usual circles and connect with other students associated with the project.
• Try something new and get out of your routine by exploring local activities and places with your little buddy.
• Develop your confidence and independence by taking the initiative to plan and make the most of your meetups.
• Have fun along the way - discover shared interests, try new activities and create positive experiences with your little buddy.
• Make a genuine difference to another student’s university experience by giving them your time, attention and companionship.
• Be part of something meaningful while gaining experience that can stay with you well beyond your time at university.

Monthly socials
We also run monthly socials that both volunteers and their paired students are encouraged to attend, with a mix of calm, creative, indoor and outdoor activities. We acknowledge that different students enjoy different things, so we aim to offer a variety of activities throughout the year, from relaxed art and craft sessions to outdoor activities such as nature walks, as well as fun social activities and games.
Our arts and crafts session also gave students the opportunity to create items that were later sold at the Christmas market, helping us raise funds for a charity and contributing to our winning the Fundraising Award at the Undeb Student Awards 2026.
The Buddy Project was also shortlisted for Best Volunteering Project of the Year in 2025.
