🥋Name: Bethany Pettifor

🥋Degree: 3rd year PhD in Biological Sciences (Microbiology/Forest Pathology)

🥋Responsibilities: As Club Secretary, I make sure everything stays organised within the club. I take minutes in all committee meetings and keep the membership register up to date. A lot of what I do as secretary is behind the scenes, but it is a very important role.

🥋Karate Grade: First Kyu (Brown-and-two-white belt) in the Wado-Ryu style of karate.

🥋When did you start karate?: I did Shotokan karate for a few years when I was a child but then I stopped and didn’t pick it up again until the second year of my undergraduate degree in 2016. I fell back in love with the sport and have never looked back.

🥋Why do you love karate and what is your favourite aspect?: I love karate because of the structure. Kata is my absolute favourite thing and I just love learning new sequences and trying to perfect them! Being a higher grade is great because it means there are loads of different katas I can work on, particularly now, in the mean time, while we form the basis for the club’s Dan (black belt) Grading syllabus. The great thing about karate at Bangor in particular is how everyone is so lovely and approachable. I’ve been through a lot with this club and they are now basically my second family.
