Bangor University is set to make its second-round appearance on the popular BBC show "University Challenge" on Monday, February 20th. The university will be pitted against another esteemed institution of higher learning in what is sure to be a battle of wits and knowledge.
For those unfamiliar with the show, "University Challenge" is a televised quiz competition featuring teams of four students from different universities. The contestants are asked a variety of questions on a range of topics, including science, history, literature, and current events, among others. The team that answers the most questions correctly at the end of the game is declared the winner.
Bangor University has appeared on the television show 6 times since the show started to air on the BBC in 1994. Bangor made it through to the second-round in 2004 and 2014 and through to the Semi-Finals in 1999 and 2013.
This seasonโs team, consisting of team captain Laura Lloyd-Williams from the School of Medical and Health Sciences and teammates, Angus(Gus) Bastiani from the School of History, Law and Social Sciences, Ethan Silcocks from the School of Medical and Health Sciences, and Roy Pounder from the School of History, Law and Social Sciences took on a team from the University of Nottingham in November 2022 and took the win with their 135 points, making this Bangorโs 3rd time in the second round.
For the students, the opportunity to compete on "University Challenge" is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They have the chance to represent their university on a national stage, and they are eager to show off their knowledge and skills. The show is about more than just winning. It's an opportunity for students to learn from one another, to make connections with other universities, and to showcase the intellectual curiosity and passion for learning that defines the university experience.
