Work with us!
These take place in the Greek Room in Main arts. There is step free access to the room, however there are some heavy doors along the way that may be difficult for a wheelchair user to get through. We are trying to find an alternative route, but for now please message the LGBT soc instagram or discord, or email us, and we can help you get to the room on the day
At book club nights, this is a time to come and discuss a book you've read with others who have read it. You can turn up and leave at any time.
At film nights, we will be turning the lights off, which may cause eyestrain.
The film may also be quite loud. If you're sensitive to noise, we recommend earplugs such as loop, or headphones. You will be able to sit at the back.
Some movies will have flashing light effects and some scenes may trigger some people. Common triggers will be written in the weekly post descriptions, and you can also ask our culture nights coordinator for specific triggers by sending us a message via instagram, email, or discord. doesthedogdie.com is a good website as well, if you are not confident doing this.
There is no expectation for you to speak or discuss the film afterwards, and you can leave and show up whenever you like during, though we ask that you try to remain quiet if doing so partway through the film. If there is an emergency, please tell our culture nights coordinator, who will help.
These take place in The Harp Inn. At the current moment, the Harp Inn has stairs in the entryway that is surrounded by pillars, and has no accessibility ramp. It is therefore currently inaccessible for wheelchair users. We have asked them to obtain a ramp, to which they have agreed. We will update once we have confirmed it has arrived. Please note that once inside, the toilets are at the top of a flight of stairs, and is not wheelchair accessible. However, while it is irritating to go back and forth, there is a wheelchair accessible toilet at the wetherspoons down the road. Our LGBTequila coordinator will be happy to help you get there if you need it.
The Harp is usually quite a subdued environment, and there is a top balcony which is even quieter, though this is a smoking area. During times like Halloween, the Harp is incredibly busy and loud. We recommend earplugs such as loops or headphones if you are sensitive to noise.
People are allowed to vape within the Harp building, and dogs are allowed inside, which is something we have no control over.
There is no expectation for you to drink at these socials, and you can turn up and leave whenever you like.
You don't have to partake in the theme, it's just a bit of fun - if you receive harassment for not joining in with a costume, please either tell our LGBTequila coordinator on the day, or message/email us to let us know, as harassment of any kind is not tolerated in LGBT society, nor in Harp.
Harp is also very against ableism, bigotry, homophobia, transphobia, zenophobia, harrassment, assault, and anything that makes another person uncomfortable. Staff will take these seriously and enforce these rules, so please do report any instances of this to one of them, or tell our LGBTequila coordinator, Rain, who is happy to help.
These take place in Activities Hub 3, above Bar Uno. There is a lift within Bar Uno to get to the Activities Hub, though Bar Uno has changed it's opening times and will no longer open before 5pm on some days. We will be looking to see if this will affect accessibility in socials, including those in other societies, and will update as soon as possible. If it does, rest assured that we, along with UNITE and BUDSS will take this up with the Student Union.
There are a couple of doors which may be difficult for a wheelchair user to navigate. If you struggle, please reach out via instagram, email, or discord to let us know and we can assist you
These are a non drinking social, and you can turn up and leave at any time.
There is no pressure to talk, and you also don't have to participate in the organised activity to come - feel free to bring your own projects and just join us for a chill afternoon! Some socials don't allow for this, such as hiking socials where we will not be in activities hub 3, but we will state which ones these are
The room we are in can be echoey.
We want as many people as possible to come to our society! We're working hard to remove as many barriers as we can so that anyone who wants to join us can join us, but we are not perfect and we do overlook some things. If you notice this, please do let us know via email, Instagram, or Discord! The links to these can be found on the main page for the society.
Hope to see you at some of our socials soon :)
