Student volunteers who have shown exceptional dedication to supporting their local community were recognised at the High Sheriff Awards 2026, held at Bangor Universityโs Council Chamber on the afternoon of 15 May 2026.
The annual awards celebrate the incredible contribution Bangor University students make through volunteering and community engagement. Established in 2007 by former High Sheriff and University Council Member Dr Dewi Roberts and his late wife, Dr Sheila Roberts, the awards were created to acknowledge and honour students who go above and beyond to make a positive difference in the community.
This yearโs ceremony highlighted the remarkable impact of student volunteers across a wide range of projects and causes, from environmental conservation and health initiatives to neurodiversity support and community outreach.
Professor Enlli Thomas, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (The Language, Culture and the Region), praised the students for their commitment and passion:
โWe are hugely impressed by the exceptional commitment of our students to making a difference. Their volunteering work spans an inspiring breadth of areas, from neurodiversity and health to environmental conservation, highlighting not only their intellectual curiosity, but also a profound sense of purpose and civic responsibility.โ

The Volunteering & Community Coordinator at Undeb Bangor Studentsโ Union described the awards as an important opportunity to recognise the dedication and compassion shown by student volunteers throughout the year.
They said:
โThe High Sheriff Awards are a really special moment to recognise the dedication, kindness and genuine care our student volunteers bring to the community. They give their time so generously, often quietly and without expecting anything back, and it means a great deal to see that recognised in this way.
The High Sheriff Awards are a highlight in the volunteering calendar every year, and itโs an honour to have the work recognised. Undeb Bangor would like to thank each one of our volunteers for their hard work and dedication, and congratulations to all the winners.โ
The awards once again showcased the positive impact Bangor University students continue to have both on campus and across the wider community, reflecting the strong culture of volunteering and civic engagement supported by Undeb Bangor.
