What is my personal tutor for?
Every student in the University has a Personal Tutor. Your Personal Tutor is there to help you make the most of your studies providing you with academic advice and support as you progress through your university career. If your Personal Tutor is unavailable, you can always contact a school staff member or come to the Student Voice team for advice and support.
Can I change my personal tutor?
If you are unhappy with the support you are receiving from your Personal Tutor, you can contact the School’s Senior Tutor or School administrator to discuss your concerns and request a change of Personal Tutor.
I want to change my degree programme. What are my options?
Your options depend on a number of factors, including your current programme, the programme you want to switch to, and what stage you are at in your studies. If you're a first year, please note that you normally can’t change your programme of study a 4 weeks after you start your studies at the University. If you’re unsure further in the academic year it’s best to speak to your School administrator or personal tutor.
Can I take a break from my studies?
It may be possible for you to take an "Authorised Interruption of Studies" if you are unable to study for a specific reason, such as illness, bereavement, or personal problems. Come in to see us at the Student Voice Team or, contact your Personal Tutor, Programme Director, or Supervisor, who can help you apply for this. Taking an interruption can have financial implications, so it's important to seek advice before deciding if this is the best course of action for you.
I think I might fail an exam. What can I do?
If you fail an exam the University will require you to resit. All resit exam grades will be capped at the pass mark unless you have extenuating circumstances which have been accepted by your academic school.
The sooner you tell your academic school about your special circumstances, it will be easier for them to support you. Students who submit special circumstances after sitting exam or receiving a mark, will have to demonstrate good reason why they did not tell their school before the exam.
I’m having problems with my PhD supervision. What can I do?
If you are having issues with your supervisor, please get in touch with the Student Voice Team. We will try and help in any way we can.
I have a disability/specific learning difficulty. What support is available to me?
You can visit or get in touch with Student Services, based in the Rathbone building on College Road, which provides support to students on a range of matters concerned with life as a student. Not everyone who uses our Service will perceive themselves as being disabled or as having a ‘disability’, the University uses this term however to cover the barriers faced by people with a wide range of physical and sensory impairments, including specific learning difficulties, enduring health conditions and mental health difficulties.
