Aikido translates as “the way to harmony with the Ki (energy) of the universe,” and is a Japanese martial art based around principles of nonaggression and nonconflict. The training comprises of 2 halves, the first half being internal, mental training involving meditation and breathing exercises, alongside postural stability exercises. The Second half of the training comprises of the martial art, a grappling art focusing on throws and joint locks, aiming to care for both the opponent as well as the practitioner.
