Connect@Bangor is a project which enables specially trained volunteers to befriend students who may face barriers when engaging in student activities or need some general support.
The different activities on offer in Bangor are an excellent outlet for a change from your studies and a good way to meet others not on your course, whether you’d be trying something new or wanting to experience something you’ve already tried before. However some students may be more comfortable with joining these clubs and societies, as well as going shopping, visiting their GP, or going to the gym, with someone else, a sidekick so to speak- this is the service we provide.
Connect@Bangor volunteers are on hand to spend time with students who need some extra company and someone to speak to, one of the ways we do this is through perhaps meeting once a week in a coffee shop to discuss classes and how things are generally. You can ask at any time for this service as we run throughout the academic year. We recognise the importance of enabling students to take part in activities to establish networks and friendship circles during their time at Bangor, these are our aims in helping our service users.
All correspondence and any personal conversations are treated confidentially unless we feel your personal safety is at risk. Even your use of the service is kept within the SVB team. All you need to do is fill in an online form and we’ll start helping you work towards YOUR personal goals.
Walk&Talk, on the other hand, is a much more open project that allows students to join in and enjoy refreshing walks around the scenic spots of Bangor, there’s no booking ahead, you just turn up as and when you want, on a day that suits you.
It’s a great way to explore the city and meet other students, the walks are led by student volunteers who are trained to actively listen, so students who feel like they need someone to open up to, on any issue that may be affecting them can air these issues in a confidential way. Our volunteers are specifically trained to lend their ear and give no advice or censure. The walks are designed to suit everyone and no previous experience in sports is needed!
With a healthy dose of fresh air and good company guaranteed, there’s no greater way to lift one’s mood than taking a stroll amongst nature after a hard day of studying. What would be better than enjoying the stunning sights of Bangor whilst also having a chat and getting to know other students?
Walk&Talk runs every Wednesday and Friday, lasting approximately an hour and leaving at 4pm from the outside of Pontio’s Main Entrance.
