Coronavirus Update

Statement on local Coronavirus restrictions for Bangor

Following a steep rise in Covid-19 cases in Bangor over recent days, the Welsh Government has announced that new local restrictions will be introduced in the Bangor City area which will be subject to a ‘Health Protection Zone’ from today Saturday 10th of October.

This means that there are additional legal restrictions which must be followed. The area included in the Zone can be seen on this map.

The safety of our students remains our priority. We want to ensure you are all aware of these new restrictions so that our community can respond and ultimately keep each other safe. We have included them below.

The ‘health protection zone’ restrictions will mean that people living in the Bangor city area:

  • will need to avoid travelling in and out of Bangor without a valid reason to do so such as travelling for work for those who can’t work from home, travelling for education or to attend a health appointment;
  • will only be able to meet people they don’t live with outdoors. They will not be able to form, or be a part of, extended households (sometimes referred to as a “bubble”).

In particular the new rules mean that:

  • You are not allowed to travel out of the Bangor City area unless it is for work or study. This means that you can’t travel back to your family home at this time (unless you are a daily commuting student), even if you are well and not self-isolating.
  • As per the guidelines, you are not permitted to form an extended household. This means you can only mix with your own household when indoors, which if you live in University Halls will be the other students in your flat. You must not enter anyone else’s accommodation, on or off campus.
  •  If you are self-isolating then you must stay in your accommodation, you are not permitted to go out.
  • When going on to campus to study please follow all of the instructions around face coverings and maintain 2 meters distance from others.

You can find more information on the Welsh Government website here.

We know that many students are complying with the restrictions in place. We thank them for their positive actions and the sacrifices they have made and for their continued support with dealing with what is ahead.

We understand that this is a troubling and testing time for many, we want to thank our incredible student community once again for supporting us and each other to combat the virus.

We are here to support you in these times. As a union, our main priority is your wellbeing and ensuring that you get the support you need. If you have any questions about any of these measures in place, please get in touch with us at
