Just under two months ago I started as your Vice President for Education here at Undeb Bangor, and what an interesting time it has been to take office. Since my first day I have been working from home, both in Bangor and my hometown, something I totally did not expect when I ran for election back in March.

Despite the challenges caused by the pandemic, me and the rest of the team have managed to make a lot of progress with our plans for the next academic year as well as supporting students and the university as a whole.

My first job within the role was presenting the feedback from the student rep focus groups to the university executive and the relevant planning groups for September. This made the university aware of studentsโ€™ opinions regarding the online teaching environment during lockdown, and how we can improve the situation for students come September. This will be an ongoing process of feedback to ensure the university gets it right and students are satisfied with their blended academic experience.

I have also attended the NUS Lead and Change conference and the Y Talwrn, NUS Wales Conference. These conferences have given me the opportunity to network and discuss ideas with other sabbatical officers nationwide. A highlight of these conferences has been to discuss how each university is handling certain issues such as sustainability and where Bangor is succeeding or perhaps not doing as well as we could be doing.

I am also in the process of planning the implementation of my manifesto points. Due to the pandemic, my priorities have changed slightly as I need to prioritise student feedback and engagement to fully represent studentsโ€™ concerns regarding next academic year and the uncertainty of the Covid situation. However, I still plan on delivering my manifesto and have been having regular conversations with the Sustainability team and other university departments to see how my manifesto points can be successfully implemented.

Please feel free to add my facebook account, James Undeb Bangor Avison, where I will be posting more frequent updates or send me an email at james.avison@undebbangor.com if you have any specific concerns/feedback about your academic experience. Stay safe and enjoy your summer.

Cheers,

James
